Song for Tijana
I enjoy writing/recording music. This song was originally composed by my friend Loïc Gak on piano in Nancy, Lorraine - France. I've arranged and recorded this version using my Yamaha keyboard and a trial version of Adobe Audition. The visualizations in the video are a small job compared to the song that I've spent hours and hours recording it!
The vehicle odometer on this Nissan Quest has suddenly stopped working. I've checked the wiring from behind the instrument cluster to ECU and the sensor itself as you see below.
Since I found nothing wrong with the wiring, I knew that the speed sensor on the transmission would be the culprit. It was difficult take the sensor out as it was all rusted. I've connected the sensor's pin to an electric motor and had it spinning at a constant speed to monitor its output on an oscilloscope. The output was messy as expected. This particular type of sensor must generate a clean sine wave but that wasn't the case as dirt and rust had built up around the rotating magnet inside. Normally sensors must be replaced with a brand new one depending on the application, but in this case I decided to repair it by sanding and polishing the inductive terminals. The output of the sensor started to look more like this:
I've used some transmission oil to lubricate the sensor and I put in back in place. I took the car for a test drive and voila! The odometer/speedometer were back and running. I believe the repaired sensor would function for an extended period and save the environment from waste. Not to mention that repairing it was a less expensive solution.
Video Rental System
I got called in to take a look at a video rental machine that had reportedly stopped and wouldn't start up. After diagnosing the system I figured out that the system has overheated due to a faulty fan which ultimately damaged the HDD. Dust has blocked every vent on the housing and since the machine was in an enclosed cabinet there was no way for the heat to escape. The challenge here, was not only to ID and replace damaged parts but to save and restore all files. Luckily the the disk would still function intermittently and I was able to save the movie and customer database.
Computer Memory Failure
Windows would crash right passed the log-on screen. I had access to this very useful tool (Memtest86+) that would allow me to scan memory blocks. This way I was able to ID and replace faulty RAM slots.
The engine on a Chevrolet Venture wouldn't start. I took the starter out after checking to make sure that the power reaches it. In this particular case, accumulation of rust and dirt wouldn't allow the pinion to engage. As a result, the solenoid connected to a linkage could no longer move the pinion. It was an easy fix as the electrical components were still functional and only the housing and the linkage needed to be refurbished. On the left, you can see the picture of the temporary test bench for the starter. The booster was used here to provide the constant current rush required by the starter.
Laptop DC Jack
Some of these laptops have flimsy DC jacks that can't withstand a lot of hits. This Sony VAIO was no exception. The trouble was to reach the broken jack! For that, the entire CPU/GPU fan assembly needed to be taken out. Finally, I've ordered a decent after market DC jack off eBay and finished the repair.
